About Salvatore Ferragamo
Salvatore Ferragamo became one of the defining figures of twentieth-century footwear design. After establishing himself in America and opening the Hollywood Boot Shop in 1923, he returned to Italy and founded his Florence-based company in 1927. His combination of craftsmanship, creativity and technical experimentation helped establish an international reputation for Ferragamo footwear.
Ferragamo’s relationship with Hollywood earned him a reputation as the “shoemaker to the stars”, while his work combined decorative design with a serious interest in the structure and comfort of footwear. His legacy is preserved by the Museo Ferragamo in Florence, established in 1995.

Salvatore Ferragamo was much more than a luxury shoemaker. His work included experiments with construction, materials and the anatomy of the foot, helping establish his reputation as an innovator as well as a designer. His famous creations include the cork wedge and the celebrated Rainbow shoe made for Judy Garland in 1938.
Ferragamo’s Florence headquarters became established at the historic Palazzo Spini Feroni, which remains closely associated with the company and today houses the Museo Ferragamo.
